My taskbar isn't working, my antivirus is disabled, IE won't work, can't copy and paste, no sound. As far as anyone can tell my computer is completely malware free.I think I've traced it back to errors in the Windows Services.Pretty much every Service depends on RPC, so trying to start them when RPC is off returns an Error 1068. Trying to Start RPC returns the Error 193:0xc1.
I can't view the Properties for each Service (nothing happens when I hit the button), and the Service window has a strange display (Screenshot). I can't find anything useful on Google/Windows Knowledge Base.Image of my messed up Computer Management thing:So any suggestions/guidance?.

I've PM'd the HJT Team about this for confirmation of your issues there. While waiting for a reply, could you check your Event Viewer for error messages that may relate to this. I'd suspect that there'll be a bunch of RPC-type errors there, so it may be a lot to wade through.
I would focus on the System log for now (if you're able to get there). To get to Event Viewer, go to Start.Run.and type in 'eventvwr.msc' (without the quotes) and press Enter. Some options to start considering are a repair install of Windows (AKA an inplace upgrade) or a clean install (so you'll have to think about backing up your data first). The Event Viewer doesn't seem to show these errors. There are some about DHCP, but again I can't get the properties to show for any of these (either by double-clicking or right-clicking).I tried sfc /scannow before, and it worked the same this time. Seemed to just run fine with no problems (although it didn't take 35 mins, more like 10, and it doesn't ask for the XP disc, which some sites say it will?). I tried running it in Safe Mode with the command prompt and got the following error:'Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files. The specific error code is 0x000006ba The RPC server is unavailable.' Considering a Repair install now, just wondering if there is any risk that this might mess up and delete all my files?

And if that doesn't work I guess I have no choice but to start making backups and reinstall windows:-. Well, I don't think sfc /scannow runs in Safe Mode, but I'm not sure.I know that many things do not run in Safe Mode and your message has been received by others, for various reasons. As for backing up.you probably should have been doing that long before your system evidenced problems, it's not mandatory, is merely based on the premise that nothing lasts forever, even happy computers. It's convenient to have system backups/images when things go wrong. There is ALWAYS some risk when doing anything.on a computer. Life has no guarantees that innocent, good intentions will have fruition. But I will say that I have never had a repair install go bad on me (but I'm only one person out of????), so I would have no fear at all of doing one.
IMO, it's a last-gasp measure to avoid doing a clean install of XP and I'm willing to take my chances with it.For that matter, I don't mind doing a clean install, if I am convinced that is what is called for.I do whatever it takes to return my systems to operational status whereby I have confidence in their ability to enable me to do what I want to do. And there's enough guidance available that I don't have to worry about not knowing how to do this or that.MS, XP Repair Install Procedures -Louis. I presume that you ran SFC.EXE /SCANNOW from normal mode before you tried it in Safe Mode? If so, then it likely completed without error in Normal Mode (it's very frustrating that there's no confirmation dialog for a successful SFC scan).I, also, have never lost data to a repair install - but this doesn't mean that it couldn't happen!!! Plus, if the repair install doesn't work, then you're faced with a clean install and will have to backup your data anyway. I'd say 'do the backup and be done with it' - that way there's no worries that something might hose your data! My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned.

Grrr grrr grrrrrrrrrrrOk, so I found my XP disc, but its for Service Pack 1, (and trying to install from it tells me that it can't install because my computer is running a newer version of Windows than is on the disc) so I follow Microsoft's instructions and try to integrate Service Pack 2 into my installation folder ( ). Problem is, I can't copy & paste, so I can't copy the i386 folder from my CD into an XPCD folder on my hard drive. So I download the Service Pack Installer anyway, and try integrating it into my C:WindowsI386 folder (which should just be the same as the one on the disc I assume?).Seemed to work fine, then tried running the installer, and when it gets to the Preparing Installation bit I get the following error:'An error occurred copying file AcVerfyr.dll to C:$WINNT$LSI386AcVerfyr.dllThe file is missing. Contact your system administrator.'
So I'm stumped again. (I changed the Integration command to 'WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe /integrate:C:WINDOWS', seeing as as far as I can tell, the only change from my method and the stated one is that the I386 folder is in WINDOWS instead of XPCD. Was this the right command?)And yes I tried SFC /SCANNOW in Normal first, which seemed to complete without error. :-Tried various things to get a repair install, which didn't work. So tried to get a repair install by booting straight from the XP Disc. First I got, for which I tried the regedit fix, and that seemed to sort it.Then the Setup continued and I get.
(Just the 'Can't install product catalogs', with the same Setup log file that everyone on Google has)So I view the Log, click Close (the only button on it), and the computer restarts, and runs the setup again. Exactly the same bit, with exactly the same error. I take the disc out, and it goes back to the first error. I chagne the boot order to HD first, and it still runs the setup.

I boot from the disk again and cancel Install, it still runs it again. So apparently I need to reformat and start again, but first I need to get back into my Computer to backup files, and at the moment whenever I start it it goes straight into XP Install. (I can still run CMD though)So any help? How can I stop this install loop/backup stuff from in here?.
If you are frustrated (like I was) with the 'annoying' ctfmon.exe process that just won't stop opening no matter what you do. Here's a simple way to disable/remove the service from your Windows XP so that it doesn't reappear from time to time. Yeah, just removing Ctfmon.exe from MSConfig does not disable Ctfmon.exe.What's Ctfmon.exe anyway?According to the official support page from, Ctfmon.exe activates the Alternative User Input Text Input Processor (TIP) and the Microsoft Office Language Bar. This file monitors the active windows and provides text input service support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard, translation, and other alternative user input technologies. It starts the Language Bar component (in the Systray) and remains running in the background even after you quit an Office XP program. It also starts each time Windows is started and remains in the background, regardless of whether an Office XP program is started.Actually, with this file you can control the computer via speech or a pen tablet, or using the onscreen keyboard inputs for Asian Languages. So.WARNING/NOTE: If you are using any of these, you should leave it enabled.BTW, If you choose ' Yes, I want to disable and remove it!' , or ' I don't need this annoying service/file',.
I'm really MAD bcoz of it':)Here's the simple How-to for you! ( DO BOTH Step A and B)A. First, Remove it from 'Startup'0. Go to Start Run, type 'msconfig'.
You can't turn any application into a Windows Service. It has to implement specific routines so SC knows how to communicate with it.
Sure you can create the service given the instructions below but that does NOT mean it will run. Do this on Windows XP sc.exe create 'Foo Service' binPath= '%SystemRoot%system32notepad.exe' this creates fine but then try to run it SC Start 'Foo Service' SC StartService FAILED 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.–May 26 '09 at 0:57.
